Windows Touchpad Not Working? Here's How to Fix It
Windows laptops route touchpad input through a driver layer that Macs don't have, which means there are more places for things to go wrong — but also more settings you can fix without any tools. Work through these in order; most people find their issue in the first four steps.
First, confirm what's actually broken.

Most Windows laptops can disable the touchpad with a function-key combo (often Fn + F5, Fn + F9, or a dedicated key with a touchpad icon), and this gets pressed by accident more often than you'd think — especially in a bag. Try the combo for your model, and check the notification area for an on-screen confirmation when you press it.
2. Confirm it's enabled in Settings
Go to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Touchpad. Confirm the top toggle is on. Note the line just below it: "Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected" — if that's off and a mouse is or was plugged in, the touchpad will be disabled automatically. Turn that on if you want both to work at once.
3. Update or reinstall the touchpad driver
Open Device Manager → Mice and other pointing devices. Look for your touchpad (often listed as a Synaptics, Elan, or "HID-compliant" device, or "Precision Touchpad" if it supports Windows' native driver). Right-click it and choose Update driver. If that finds nothing, try Uninstall device, then restart — Windows will reinstall a default driver automatically on boot.
If your laptop maker (Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, etc.) has its own touchpad utility, check their support site for a dedicated driver download — manufacturer drivers often expose features the generic Windows driver doesn't.
4. Check Device Manager for a disabled or errored device
Still in Device Manager, look for a small down-arrow icon (disabled) or yellow warning triangle (driver error) next to the touchpad entry. Right-click and choose Enable device if it's disabled. A yellow triangle usually means step 3's driver reinstall is the fix.
5. Run the Windows hardware troubleshooter
Go to Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters, and run Hardware and Devices if it's listed (on newer builds, search "troubleshoot" from the Start menu instead). It won't catch everything, but it correctly identifies a genuinely disabled device or a service that failed to start.
6. Check Windows Update
Precision Touchpad support is partly delivered through Windows Update, not just device drivers. Go to Settings → Windows Update and install anything pending, including optional driver updates under "Advanced options → Optional updates."
7. Check the BIOS/UEFI setting
On some laptops, the internal pointing device can be disabled at the firmware level — separate from anything Windows controls. Restart, enter BIOS/UEFI setup (commonly Del, F2, or F10 at boot — check your manufacturer's key), and look under a menu like "Internal Pointing Device" or similar for a setting that might be toggled off.
8. Rule out a loose ribbon cable
If the touchpad worked, then died suddenly after the laptop was dropped, flexed, or opened for a battery/RAM swap, the internal ribbon cable connecting it to the motherboard may have come loose. This is a hardware issue and means opening the case (or having a repair shop do it) to reseat the connector — but it's worth knowing this is a real, common, and usually cheap fix, not a full board replacement.
